Lewis novels to the big screen. Since 2004, the studio has been working on a quartet of Chronicles of Narnia movies, with the first slated for release in December 2010. But it's been a hard slog. Lionsgate's two Chronicles of Narnia movies, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian, were both critically panned and box-office disappointments. Now The Silver Chair, which was supposed to be the fourth Narnia movie, has been indefinitely postponed. Basically, there's a sequel in development for every Narnia movie. The Horse and His Boy, which will be out in December, is a direct follow-up to Prince Caspian. The Horse and His Boy is written by Stephen Donaldson, who wrote The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The Silver Chair was supposed to be a sequel to The Horse and His Boy. So what happened? The Narnia movies have a complicated history. In the early 1970s, before Disney owned the rights to C.S. Lewis's novels, producer Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump) optioned the rights to them and was going to direct a big-budget movie called The Chronicles of Narnia. The movie was going to be a big-budget, high-profile effort like The Time Machine, which also featured the voice talents of Michael Gambon (Harry Potter) and Richard Dreyfuss (Jurassic Park). But Zemeckis was famously ambitious. He wanted to make an epic that was more than two hours long, like Lord of the Rings. And he wanted to make a movie that would not only be faithful to the books, but would also contain things that Lewis hadn't put in the books. That was a bit tricky, as Lewis wrote The Chronicles of Narnia, but never wrote a full sequel to The Magician's Nephew. When Disney came in to acquire the rights to the books, they asked if they could remake The Chronicles of Narnia. Disney wanted to make it darker. They also wanted to include an evil entity like the White Witch from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, in the Narnia world.
